1. What blessings do we look forward to as followers of Jesus?
: Many people think they would be blessed by God if they believe in Jesus. Many of them expect the blessings are like good life, prosperity, success in carriers, health, etc. But the blessings Jesus taught was a lot different than these things. Jesus didn’t promise us that if we believe in Him, we will have no problems in our lives. He rather promised that He will be with us when we go through trials, hardships, even persecution. Jesus said “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Jesus told us that we don’t belong to this world when we believe in Him, but we belong to heaven. Because we are not of this world, we will have hardships in our lives. And sometimes we might be persecuted because of our faith. But we have to remember that Jesus has overcome the world. Jesus who overcome the world will be always with us and give us the victory in every situation in our lives. That is the true blessing we have received from God.
많은 사람들은 그들이 하나님을 믿으면 축복을 받을 것이고 그 축복은 성공한 삶, 물질적인 풍요, 좋은 직업을 갖는 것, 건강한 몸 등과 같은 모양으로 온다고 믿고 살아갑니다. 하지만 예수님이 말씀하신 축복은 많은 이들이 기대하는 그 축복과는 많이 다른 것 같습니다. 예수님은 우리에게 우리가 예수님을 믿으면 이 땅에서 잘 되고 아무런 문제가 없을 것이라고 약속하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 이 땅에서는 우리가 환난과 어려움을 당하지만 그 가운데 우리와 함께하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “이 세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당하나 담대하라 내가 세상을 이기었다”(요16:33)고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리가 예수님을 믿을 때 우리는 이 세상에 속한 자가 아니라 하나님께 속한 자, 곧 하늘에 속한 자들이 되었습니다. 우리는 이 세상의 것이 아니므로 우리의 이 땅에서의 삶에는 어려움과 고통이 있을 수 있고 우리의 믿음 때문에 스데반처럼 핍박당할수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 예수님이 세상을 이미 이기신 분임을 기억해야 합니다. 죄와 사망을 이기시고 다시 사심으로 이 세상을 이기신 예수님이 항상 우리 안에 계시며 우리가 이 땅에서 어려움을 당할 때에 우리와 함께 하시어 승리 주심을 믿어야 합니다. 그것이 바로 예수님을 믿는 우리가 받은 선물입니다.

3. How did Stephen react to the persecution? 스데반은 핍박에 대해 어떻게 반응했습니까?
: When the Jewish people falsely accused Stephen and persecuted him because of his faith in Jesus, he was not scared and he did not run away. He rather boldly preached the truth in front of many people who were accusing him. They got angry and ended up killing him. Even at the moment he was dying, he prayed the same prayer like Jesus did “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”. Stephen was persecuted because of his faith in Jesus. But he didn’t stop telling people about Jesus. He saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God and committed his spirit to him.
유대인들이 스데반이 예수님을 믿는다는 이유로 거짓으로 고발하고 핍박하였을 떄, 스데반은 두려워하거나 도망가지 않았습니다. 그는 오히려 담대히 그를 고발하는 그들 앞에서 진리의 말씀을 선포하였습니다. 그들은 화가나서 결국 스데반을 죽이고 맙니다. 그는 죽어가던 그 순간에도 예수님이 십자가에서 죽으실 때 하신 기도처럼 “저들의 죄를 저들에게 돌리지 마옵소서” 라고 기도합니다. 스데반은 예수님을 향한 그의 믿음 때문에 픽박받았지만 사람들에게 예수님에 대하여 말하는 것을 멈추지 않았습니다. 그는 죽는 그 순간에 하나님 우편에 서계신 예수님을 바라보며 그의 영혼을 주님께 맡겨드렸습니다.
